A Look at Recent Australian University Patent Filings

Australia is home to 44 universities with at least one university main campus based in each state or territory. This article looks at the Australian patent filings (provisional, standard and innovation applications) for these 44 Universities from January 2017 to June 2022.

 

 

When reading the graphs below, it is important to note that in cases where there are multi-party applicants, each applicant has been assigned a score of one. Hence, an Australian patent number with three different universities as the applicants on record will appear three times in the data. This method ensures each applicant is taken into consideration when analysing the data and, although the overall number of filings will be inflated using this method, it does provide a realistic and recent account of the patent landscape within Australian Universities.

 

Patent Filings by Universities around Australia

There are no major surprises here with The University of New South Wales and Monash University heading the list based on patent filings over the last 5 years. Other major Universities such as The University of Sydney, The University of Melbourne and The University of Queensland all appear in the top 5 Australian Universities based on patent filings.

 

 

Number of Standard, Innovation and Provisional Applications filed by Universities around Australia

Provisional applications are responsible for a majority of the total patent filings. The graph below shows the top 10 Universities with the total number of patents filed broken down into number of provisional, standard and innovation applications.
